Referential is one of my favorite literary journals. It’s not just because they publish my stuff but because of the innovative twist the journal provides. When you submit poetry, prose, or art, you must refer to another piece in the magazine.
For example, my photograph “Field,” refers to a line in Dominique Traverse Locke’s poem “By Winter.” Specifically this line: “the pastureland glows golden.” I love this line. And after I read Dominique’s poem again, I realized I just might have a photograph to go with it.
It’s also a great way to get readers and writer to read the journal. I mean, really read it. Several issues. Poetry and prose and blogs. See what they publish and see if you have anything that might fit what they’re looking for. Then read. And refer.
